SAND SCULPTURES 2015

The exhibition is open until Sunday 13 September

The Sand Sculptures Exhibition is open to public until 13 September in piazza Brescia and has as theme Il Centenario della Grande Guerra (The Centenary of the Great War).

This year’s theme includes the reconstruction, thanks to the Dolomite sand of Jesolo’s coast, of the historical moments that occurred during the First World War to remember those that lived this tragic war known, unfortunately, as the Great War.

In piazza Brescia from 1 to 10 July, where there is also the bust of Andrea Bafile, 10 sand statues will be prepared:  9 having as theme the Great War and one dedicated to the earthquake in Nepal that will be one of the charity projects supported by the next Sand Nativity.

The sculptors that will take care of the works are a team formed by leading artistic exponents of the sand sculpting world, under the guidance of the American artistic director  Richard Varano, an indisputable name of Jesolo’s festival.

The work of the sculptors is supported by a team of 8 students of the Liceo Artistico Statale (Public High School) M. Guggenheim of Venice under the guidance of prof. Marco Lorusso and coordinated by Elena Lana from Jesolo.

The team of sculptors:
  • Director Richard Varano
  • Damon Farmer: artist from Kentucky whose works have delighted the public all around the world. In Jesolo he has been sculpting for some years as well as being the author of the perspective scenography of the sand nativity.
  • Baldrick (Richard) Buckle: English artist and sculptor, resident in Holland, who loves realising ironic works.
  • Ilya Filimontsev: after his artistic studies in Mocow, Ilya became a jewellery designer. At the same time, he specialised in ice sculpting. He left his job as jeweller to study sculpting at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute of Surikov becoming, today, one of the most requested sand artists in the world.
  • Susanne Ruseler: In college, she studied biology, but right away she understood that her real passion was sculpture. This talented artist from Rotterdam can sculpt any type of object or person of any dimension.
  • Pavel Mylnikov: he is recognised by everybody for his ability, expressed in the beautiful statue of Pope John Paul II that welcomed the visitors at the entrance of the 2006 edition of Sand Nativity. The Russian artist was 5 times world champion of sand sculpture and 11 times winner of the International and Russian competitions of sand sculpture.
  • Nikolay Torkhov: graduate of the Moscow State Academic Institute, Nikolay is member of the National Youth Exhibitions that promotes the art of young artists. In last winter’s edition, Nikolay managed to sculpt in the sand a tired, pregnant Mary, full of pathos.

The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday 11 July, 8.30 p.m., piazza Brescia.
